“Petrykivka”: Ukrainian: Петриківський розпис) is a traditional Ukrainian decorative painting style, originating from the village of Petrykivka in Dnipropetrovsk oblast of Ukraine, where it was traditionally used to decorate house walls and everyday household items. The earliest known examples of this style date from the 18th century, but it continues to thrive and develop as a modern art form.

The distinctive features of this folk art style are its flower patterns, distinctive brush techniques, and its traditionally white background. In 2012 the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine recognized Petrykivka painting as a part of the intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine, and it was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The people of the village of Petrykivka decorate their living quarters, household belongings and musical instruments with a style of ornamental painting that is characterized by fantastic flowers and other natural elements, based on careful observation of the local flora and fauna.

This art is rich in symbolism: the rooster stands for fire and spiritual awakening, while birds represent light, harmony and happiness. In folk belief, the paintings protect people from sorrow and evil. Local people, and in particular women of all ages, are involved in this folk art tradition. Every family has at least one practitioner, making decorative painting an integral part of daily existence in the community. The painting traditions, including the symbolism of the ornamental elements, are transferred, renewed and enhanced from one generation to another.

Local schools at all levels, from pre-school to college, teach the fundamentals of Petrykivka decorative painting, with all children given the opportunity to study it. The community willingly teaches its skills and know-how to anyone who shows an interest. The tradition of decorative and applied arts contributes to the renewal of historical and spiritual memory and defines the identity of the entire community.

Belize is a country on the north-eastern coast of Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Guatemala to the west and south. It also shares a maritime boundary with Honduras to the southeast. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and is considered part of the Caribbean region and the historical British West Indies.

The Belize Barrier Reef turned 10,000 years old on June 8, 2022, and Belize is celebrating the longevity of this natural wonder by pledging to continue preserving it for generations today and those to come. The second-largest barrier reef in the world, it extends the full length of Belize, forming an enormous lagoon along its coast and protecting its shores from large waves, even during extreme weather. Belize has committed to preserving a full 30% of its oceanic territory— over 10,000 square kilometers, including each of its seven marine protected areas. Belize’s Barrier Reef has long drawn SCUBA divers, snorkelers and fisherman from across the globe, so it’s no surprise it was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1996. Africa is the ‘cradle of humankind’. Fossils found in Africa, show that human beings and their closest relatives the gorilla and chimpanzees were born and evolved in Africa.

There are 54 countries in Africa today, according to the United Nations. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Africa is home to the world’s largest desert and home of the world’s longest river: The Nile. Most of the world’s diamonds come from Africa (around 95% as well as 50% of the world’s gold) and it produces 70% of the world’s cocoa beans!

The continent has up to 90 percent of the world’s chromium and platinum. The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa. It holds 65 per cent of the world’s arable land and ten percent of the planet’s internal renewable fresh water source.

Africa, the second-largest continent, is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the Equator. The continent includes the islands of Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Comoros.

The number one reason for travellers visiting Africa is to embark on a wildlife safari or climb Kilimanjaro. While Africa certainly has some of the most extensive wildlife viewing opportunities and one of the seven summits, there are many other reasons to travel to Africa.

Since 2005, unusually warm Caribbean waters have been increasingly threatening the coral reefs. Coral reefs support some of the most diverse marine habitats in the world, but they are fragile ecosystems. When tropical waters become unusually warm for extended periods of time, microscopic plants called zooxanthellae, which are symbiotic partners living within the coral polyp tissues, die off.

These plants provide food for the corals and give them their color. The result of the death and dispersal of these tiny plants is called coral bleaching and can lead to the devastation of large areas of reef. More than 42% of corals are completely bleached, and 95% are experiencing some type of whitening. Historically, the Caribbean is thought to contain 14% of the world’s coral reefs.

A day or two ago
I thought I’d take a ride
And soon, Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank
And then we got up sot

A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow,
And on my back I fell;
A gent was riding by
In a one-horse open sleigh,
He laughed as there I sprawling lie,
But quickly drove away. Ah!

Now the ground is white
Go it while you’re young,
Take the girls tonight
and sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bobt ailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And snap! You’ll take the lead.
